The Government Accountability Office (GAO) was primarily established to serve the public by investigating how the federal government spends the tax dollars it receives. The GAO is considered to be the "congressional watchdog" for the federal government. They take part in developing the auditing standards for all agencies who receive financial assistance from the government, known as Generally Accepted Governmental Auditing Standards (GAGAS).
