Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are a set of rules and standards that are used companies to assemble their financial statements. This term "generally accepted" means that an accounting authority has established these principles to be universally accepted throughout the accounting industry. Currently the United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP) are in middle of a convergence period with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
